Description
Thallus comprises numerous fine stipes with feathery branches. Apices of some species (e.g. H. musciformis) have hooks that can attach to substrate in a manner similar to that of tendrils on vines. Colour ranges from light brown to dark red. Usually about 10-30 cm long but may exceed 50 cm.
Habitat
Generally attaches subtidally to coral, stones or shells on sheltered tropical reef flats. Can also be cultivated on ropes suspended in the sea. Some species are common epiphytes of algae such as Sargassum.

Production
Hypnea has been irregularly harvested as a source for carrageenan (similar to Kappaphycus carrageenan in characteristics) but does not seem to have established a regular market. It has been cultivated successfully (e.g. in India) and has been harvested as beach-drift in Senegal in quantities on the order of 100 tons/annum.
